JIM DONOVAN RETURNS TO THE BEACHLAND BALLROOM

Cleveland, Ohio – Little Fish Records announced today that Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors will be returning to Cleveland to perform at The Beachland Ballroom ( 15711 Waterloo Road, Cleveland, OH 44110; 216-383-1124) on Friday, April 21st along with opening acts Big Ship and Scott Stiert.  Tickets are $10 /advance; $14 / day of show.  Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the show starts at 8:00 p.m.

Jim Donovan was a founding member of the 90’s band, Rusted Root, that sold over 3 million records to date.  He was also voted “Drum Circle Facilitator of the year” by the readers of Drum! Magazine.  He has appeared on the David Letterman and Conan O’Brien shows, and his music with the band has been featured in major motion pictures, network TV shows and allowed him to share the stage with legendary acts such as Carlos Santana, the Grateful Dead, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Sting, and the Allman Brothers among many others.  After an eleven year hiatus to help raise his family, he’s now back fronting the Sun King Warriors, a danceable, emotionally engaging groove rock group with a blend of rootsy acoustic vibes and a ton of drums.  Donovan’s debut album with the Sun King Warriors was released in 2016 and gained critical national acclaim and wide, non-commercial and AAA radio play.  The Washington Times called it “One of the most eclectic and exciting discs to come out in some time”, while Relix magazine said “Donovan channels unabashed enthusiasm into a series of songs that are both rowdy and rejuvenating.”  Sun King Warriors can best be described as a mix of Americana rock with a strong dose of tribal style drumming.  Think Led Zeppelin III and IV mixed with Rusted Root’s “When I Woke” era rhythmic intensity and the authentic vocal emotion of Mumford & Sons.    www.sunkingwarriors.com

Cleveland’s BIG SHIP will be providing support for the evening featuring jam-rock veterans “Dreadlock” Dave McDougal (Waterband) and Michael Rotman (Oroboros).  The group has an energetic, soulful style no matter what songs they play, and their tight 3-part harmonies really supplement the rhythmic grooves.  What is also unique is McDougal’s bass guitar playing, which he often plays like a lead guitar.  www.bigshipmusic.com

Opening things up for the evening will be singer/songwriter Scott Stiert, aka “Acoustic Scotty”.  Hailing from Milan, Ohio , Stiert’s sound is inspired by the stylings of such artists as James Taylor, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin and Johnny Cash to straight up Blues. Scott has been on the local music scene for the last decade. He was the lead singer and guitarist for the 3 piece band Plank Road from 2001-2011. He has since gone on to do his solo acoustic act.

FOR RELEASE:

March 24, 2017

REGGAE OHIO: CARLOS JONES / ARK BAND AT THE WOODLANDS!
Cleveland, Ohio – Little Fish Records announced today that Carlos Jones & The PLUS Band (aka

Peace, Love, and Unity Syndicate) will be performing at The Woodlands Tavern (1200 W. 3rd Ave.,

Columbus, OH 43212; 614-299-4987) with Columbus-based reggae powerhouse – The Ark Band on Friday,

April 21 at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 day of show. This show is for all ages.

Long considered one of the pioneers of the “American Reggae” movement starting with I-Tal/USA (1978-1984) and then with the legendary First Light (1984-1998), Carlos Jones keeps on doing what he does best – singing, writing, and performing his unique style of roots reggae, or as some have called it – “Island Soul”. His band – the Peace, Love, Unity Syndicate (aka “PLUS Band”) provides a solid backdrop for Jones’ warm, heartfelt vocals. The peace-love-unity theme pervades his music, which can be very spiritually uplifting and inspirational: almost gospel-like in nature. However, he can get a party started at the count of 4 with his tight reggae and calypso beats. After three studio releases (Roots With Culture/2004; Leave A Trail/2009; and Positive Vibrations/2011), Jones finally put out his first live recording (Live From Cleveland/2016), captured at Cleveland’s Playhouse Square outdoor performance from September 2016. Though recorded on a cell phone, it is a surprisingly good quality recording and really captures the essence of the group’s live show, as it builds from song to song and the audience realizes that they’ve been pulled in to this “positive vibration”. While Jones used to perform regularly in Columbus with both I-Tal and First Light, this will be the PLUS Band’s first trip back in a couple of years. For more information on Carlos Jones, go to www.carlosjones.com

Sometimes taken for granted in their home market of Columbus, The Ark Band is another Ohi treasure when it comes to the roots reggae genre. They have played in 48 out of the 50 states and have received RAVE reviews everywhere they’ve played – from Austin, TX to the Vermont Reggae Festival. With four CD releases on Little Fish Records, they have a trove of great original music and yet they can also do a whole night of Bob Marley covers if they want to. The nucleus of the group consists of “the St. Lucian rhythm twins” – brothers Terry and Eustace Bobb, who were born in St. Lucia but migrated to Columbus back in the early ‘80’s. With the addition of guitarist/singer/songwriter Mark Hunter a few years back, the group’s current lineup was solidified and their most recent CD release – Fire Dub, served to showcase the band’s musical and lyrical versatility. What is amazing is that both The Ark Band and Carlos Jones & the PLUS Band have been praised for being among the best live reggae bands in the country by people like Chuck Foster (Beat Magazine) and Dermot Hussey (Sirius/XM radio). This will be a great opportunity for Columbus reggae fans to catch both groups on one stage and see the best that Ohio has to offer.

New Release!

Check out Carlos Jones & The PLUS Band: Live in Cleveland!

It was a beautiful week night in mid-September and the faithful gathered to squeeze one last drop of summer out of the year before the leaves turned and fell and the snowflakes would cover the landscape in a sea of whiteness. After making a personnel change in the spring, Carlos decided to pare down the song list and focus on nailing down a smaller, core group of material that the band could nail down for their busy summer. So by the end of the summer, the band was smoking hot. After trying a couple of times to capture a live set earlier in the year, we weren’t happy with what we were hearing, so we pretty much scrapped that idea and started to look forward to working on the next studio release. Little did we know that Jeff Reding from Vidmag Media would show up unannounced with good intentions to video this performance. He posted the video that he captured in two 45 minute installments on Facebook, and when I had a chance to digest what he had captured, I called Carlos and told him that I think we might have something here! While we realize this isn’t what you would call a “hi-fidelity” recording – it was captured on an I-Phone by the way – it’s still a pretty darn good representation of what Carlos Jones & the PLUS Band is all about: the energy, the presentation, and the good vibes that the band brings all year ‘round. So realize that there may be a few imperfections in the recording, but enjoy this on those nights that you can’t get out to hear these guys in person.
